It is produced from authentic African mud cloth using an ancient process. The fabric is hand spun to make seven individual cloth sheets. Each strip of cloth is then sewn together. The whole piece of fabric is then dyed in tea made from Bogalon tree found in sub-Saharan Africa. The tea acts as a fixative for the hand painted mud designs that are created with specially prepared mud. These hats are bleached after painting to give them a lighter look.
